A melanocytoma is a mole or “magnocellular nevus” of the optic nerve. A melanocytoma is considered benign. Rare cases of melanocytomas becoming malignant have been reported.1, 2, 3, 4, 5

For this reason, melanocytomas should be documented with a fundus photo and the patient should see the eye doctor yearly to make sure no significant change is occuring.

Melanocytomas may rarely cause blockage in the blood vessels to the retina, resulting in vision loss.1
